Points of Interest
- The Warren District achieved a reduction in crash fatalities for the
third consecutive year. The district is on track to meet the Patrol’s
strategic goal of a fatality rate of one per 100 million vehicle miles
traveled in 2007.
- Alcohol was a factor in 42 percent of the district’s fatal
crashes in 2005. Two district-wide OVI tactical squads were initiated
by joining the most aggressive OVI enforcement officer from each post
to form north and south squads. These officers and other troopers in
the district made 2,597 OVI arrests to remove impaired drivers from
the road.
- Troopers visited 143 local high schools to deliver traffic safety
messages. These campaigns included mock traffic crashes, “None
for Under 21” events, Buckle Up for a Successful Season,
and a variety of safety initiatives, which were delivered to the schools
throughout the year in order to keep traffic safety on the minds of
young drivers.
- The district’s Investigative Unit conducted 600 case investigations
in 2005, including work to support the Patrol’s investigation
of a murder on the Ohio Turnpike in Cuyahoga County. Because many leads
in the case originated from or involved western Pennsylvania, Warren
investigators have been very active in this ongoing investigation.
- Troopers were active in the Criminal Patrol program, initiating 247
felony case investigations. Seventeen troopers earned the Criminal Patrol
Award for completing five or more felony case investigations with felony
arrests. In addition, troopers made 63 auto larceny apprehensions.
