Patrol seizes cocaine, heroin and marijuana valued at $251,730 in Miami County

COLUMBUS – Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers seized 590 grams of heroin, valued at $236,000, 140 grams of cocaine, valued at $14,000, and 346 grams of marijuana, valued at $1,730, during an OVI arrest Friday on interstate 75 in Miami County. The Patrol also seized $28,980 in cash during the stop. The suspect will be arraigned today in Miami County Common Pleas Court on felony charges associated with the case.

The driver, Dustin G. Smith, 27, of Vandalia, was charged with first-degree felony aggravated trafficking, first-degree felony drug abuse heroin, second-degree felony drug abuse cocaine, fifth-degree felony drug abuse marijuana, and fifth-degree felony possession of criminal tools. Smith was also cited for an OVI violation.

The Piqua Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol received a call from the Miami County 911 Center about a possible impaired driver who was observed striking a guardrail on northbound interstate 75 near Piqua. A trooper located and stopped the 1990 Chevrolet Corvette near milepost 81 at 8:52 p.m. on Friday. The drugs and cash were found in a search incident to arrest.

The suspect is incarcerated in the Miami County Jail. The vehicle was seized for state forfeiture.

If convicted, the suspect could face up to 30 years in prison and up to a $60,000 fine.

Through October 2006, state troopers seized more than 4.8 million grams of illegal narcotics, valued at nearly $53 million.
