Victim names released in Portage County aircraft crashes
RAVENNA – The Ohio State Highway Patrol has released the names of victims from this afternoon’s multiple aircraft crashes, in which four people were killed.

Killed in the crashes that occurred at 2:06 p.m. today, approximately 20 miles east of the Akron-Canton Airport, were: Christopher J. Erdovegi, 19, of Lakewood; Mark P. Schaden, 36, of Middlefield; John P. Plavcan, 55, of Newbury; and Alan L. Lyons, 38, of Shreve.

Investigating troopers have confirmed that a Cessna 172 L and a Lancair 235 aircraft crashed in Rootstown Township, in Portage County, near the intersection of County Road 18 (Tallmadge Road) and Industry Road. Erdovegi and Lyons were in the Cessna, and Schaden and Plavcan were in the Lancair.

Troopers from the Ravenna Post are conducting an on-scene investigation, including members of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Aviation and Crash Reconstruction units. Flight paths for each aircraft are still being investigated with assistance from the National Transportation Safety Board.

The air space restriction that was established by the Federal Aviation Administration has been lifted.

The Federal Aviation Administration is en route to the scene, and the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified of the crash. Rootstown Township Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene, and the Portage County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control.
