DAYTON – Tpr. Kyle T. Albright from the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Dayton Post was struck by a vehicle early this morning during a DUI traffic stop on Interstate 75 in the city of West Carrollton in Montgomery County. Patrolman Gene D. Jarman of the West Carrollton Police Department, who was assisting Tpr. Albright, was also struck and injured.
At 2:41 a.m. today, Tpr. Albright, assisted by Patrolman Jarman, was conducting a traffic stop of a 1994 Chevrolet Corvette, driven by Lance R. Edwards, 42, of Dayton, on Interstate 75, at milepost 47 in the city of West Carrollton. While Edwards was being arrested for DUI, a 1989 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by Robert W. Stein, 50, of Kettering, struck the left rear of Patrolmen Jarman’s cruiser, forcing it into Tpr. Albright’s patrol car. The patrol car then struck Tpr. Albright, Patrolman Jarman, and Edwards.
Tpr. Albright, Patrolman Jarman, and Edwards were transported to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton where they were treated and released. Stein was also transported to Miami Valley Hospital and admitted for head injuries sustained during the crash. He was not wearing a safety belt.
Edwards was charged with driving under the influence and a speed violation of 100-mph in a posted 65-mph zone. Charges against Stein are pending completion of the crash investigation.
The West Carrollton Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and the West Carrollton Fire Department assisted at the scene of the crash.
