Two ODOT workers killed, one injured on US 250

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Two Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) workers were killed and one was injured this morning after their vehicle was struck by a passing commercial vehicle on US 250 in Tuscarawas County.

John Webb, 54, of Carrollton, was killed instantly and Allen Cappel, 42, of Uhrichsville, was extricated from the vehicle and later pronounced dead at Union Hospital in Dover. Another ODOT worker sustained minor injuries from the crash and was also transported to Union Hospital.

At approximately 10:12 a.m., Webb, Cappel, and another ODOT employee were conducting berm inspections in the southbound berm on eastbound US 250. A 2000 Mack commercial vehicle from J & J Corse of Newcomerstown, driven by Earnest Miles, 67, of Newcomerstown, drove off the right side of the road and struck the left rear of the ODOT vehicle, forcing it off the right side of the berm and into a guardrail.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s New Philadelphia Post, Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office, ODOT, New Philadelphia Police Department, New Philadelphia Fire Department, and the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene of the crash.

The Patrol’s investigation of the crash is ongoing.
