The Flying Wheel, which is a federally registered trademark, is one of the most distinguishable images of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The “Flying Wheel” was the idea of an engineer named Joseph Goldberg in the 1930s.
The official Flying Wheel and Trooper Badge marks are available for approved uses from electronic files or printed artwork from the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Office of Strategic Services. Graphic elements should not be scanned or reproduced from a previously printed version.
Digital files are also available for download:
Application for Ohio State Highway Patrol License - Please read the instructions carefully and complete all sections of the application.
Applicants/products are evaluated by the Ohio State Highway Patrol Trademark Licensing Review Committee, which is comprised of executive-level Division representatives. These evaluations are taken into consideration when authorizing license agreements.
A sample of each new product needs to be included with a product review form to be presented before the committee. A product approval form must accompany each item. These products need to display the trademarks of the Patrol at this point in the process.
Only completed applications will be reviewed, and you will receive a written response to your application within 30 days of submission. Please keep in mind that we do not accept all applications, and will license only those items that we feel are appropriate to the mission of the Patrol.
If you have questions regarding applying for a license to use the Flying Wheel mark for commercial purposes, please e-mail Michele DeGraffinreed or call 614-752-2792.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol insignia/logo is a registered trademark/servicemark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Any use of the OSHP logo/emblem except those uses outlined in the Ohio Revised Code, Ohio Administrative Code, and OSHP Rules & Regulations, policies and procedures, must be licensed.
The Patrol name and identifying symbol are managed through the Trademark Licensing Program that provides protection of the Patrol’s name and image. A major component of the licensing program includes products, services, films, videos, etc., utilizing the Patrol name and registered mark.
